First Aid at Work - 3 days

A.I.D

All organisations are required by law to have a sufficient number of first-aid qualified members of staff.*

Employers are also responsible for identifying specific work hazards, and ensuring they have the sufficient equipment, facilities and personnel to effectively deal with them. As part of each assessment, the HSE recommends organisations should consider things such as the nature of the work and the subsequent hazards and risks, the size of the organisation, work patterns and accident histories.

The ‘First Aid at Work’ qualification is ideal for those wishing to become a First Aider. Over 3 days, those enrolled will gain a diverse set of skills and expertise so they are confident to effectively administer first aid in the workplace.

The purpose of this course is to orientate the First Aider to the initial assessment and management of pre-hospital emergencies in the workplace.

The theoretical content of the course, and the practical skills acquired during it, are designed to enable the student to provide the first aid skills needed to give immediate care. The course represents the minimum level of training necessary to manage the casualty before more experienced help is available.

Upon Completion of the course the student will be able to:

Understand the principles of first aid

Provide effective management at an incident

Establish immediate care priorities

Initiate the primary care necessary within the first few minutes of a life threatening emergency

In order to successfully complete the course the student must:

Attend the entire course

Pass practical assessments in the following subjects on day four of the course:

o   Arrest of bleeding

o   Unconsciousness

o   Basic Life Support

A student failing one of these elements will be re-tested by a second examiner, failure at this stage will mean a failure to complete the course

Certificates awarded on successful completion of the course valid for three years. To keep qualification valid you will need to attend a two day refresher course within 28 days of your certificate expiring.

The qualification is assessed via on-going written and/or oral questioning, in addition to practical demonstration.
